ASK DEAN ABOUT THE GLORY, THE PROPHETIC...ETC.

Feb 18 08

Q.

Bro Dean
, I just read your observations for the coming year, and I sense in my spirit you are hearing from God. I need to ask a question. Can you please help me understand exactly what is meant by "apostolic"? I hear it mentioned nearly daily. I hear people refer to an apostolic mantle, or an apostolic church. What does that really mean, and how is it manifested. So that someone like me can understand it's application for the church and "apostolic" ministries of today.I know this must be a very poor question to be asking considering I have been a Christian for nearly 30 years. But these terms are not explained so that folks like me understand how they are to be recognized when we encounter them. Please help me out here. Grace and Peace. Judy

A.

Hi Judy,

It is difficult to say "exactly" what is meant by the word "apostolic" because so many use it to mean so many different things. However, in Spirit-filled or charismatic churches, the word usually stems from this scripture in Ephesians chapter 4:
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God...
This is referred to as the "five-fold" ministry simply because five "offices" are listed in verse eleven. Since we all know some who are pastors, and some who are teachers, and some who are evangelists, the only thing left are the apostles and prophets. But wait, don't we also know some who prophecy? So it seems the only office remaining is the apostolic one.

And since so much prophecy has already been restored to the church, it only seems right that we must be near the time that the apostolic office will be restored too. At which point the church will at long last be functioning in the full five-fold ministry that God designed for it.

The only problem is that nobody is sure what apostolic ministry truly is. I mean this can get complicated. Just because one can prophesy, doesn't mean that the person holds the "prophetic office", or does it? Well it depends on who you ask.

Now, in the Greek, the word for apostle (apostolos) simply means "a delegate, a messenger, one sent forth with orders".  You could think of an apostle as someone who God gives a blueprint to, and then that person leads others in building and carrying out that blueprint. I have heard that the original meaning of the Greek word comes from a fleet of ships. The lead ship is the apostle ship, but all the ships that follow are part of the apostolic formation (or team).

Thus, in a practical sense, an apostle is simply one who leads a group of ships (i.e., home groups / churches / networks) in a given direction. A "pastor" is more like the captain of a ship, while the "apostle" is more like the admiral in charge of a fleet of ships.

In this sense, the word apostle conveys much more authority than a pastor, and really, that's what many are talking about when they use the word apostolic. They are simply saying something has more authority from God on it than it otherwise would.

Thus an "apostolic ministry" is a ministry that God has given authority to to carry out a plan, and generally one that is leading other ministries to help carry out the plan. An "apostolic revival" is one where the revival is led by apostles who have been specifically charged by God to lead it. An "apostolic anointing" is an anointing where God grants the power to carry out the plan He has set in place. "Apostolic power" is where one has the authority given by God to command healings, miracles and so on.

This is why so many people talk about "apostolic". They sense that God is raising us up to a new level of that authority and power. They sense that God is finally restoring the apostolic office to the church.

But hold on.

Does that mean we are there yet? Or is it more like some can prophecy but only a very few actually hold the "prophetic office"?

As I see things, we still have a lot to learn as the church attempts to move into this level of authority. One of the big things to learn is that apostles need to be like fathers, helping those under them to grow into maturity. An apostolic office is not simply the authority to order others around. It is meant to help "equip the saints for the work of ministry".

In this regard, one of the principle pioneers of what the apostolic office really is all about is Bill Johnson. He has written an excellent article on this subject that you can read here: Apostolic Teams. I think if you read Bill's article, you will get a better sense of how God truly intends for "apostles" to serve the body of Christ.

I hope this made sense to you.

God bless,
Dean

Hello Dean:

The Lord has me on a new quest and I am stimyed at this time. It is about a spiritual event that takes place in my life at the hands of the Lord. It is a 444 day cycle of change.  In a seven year season of rebuilding my life, I had 4, 444 day cycles happen. All but one happened with a spiritual manifestation that started the clock ticking.

The first cycle started with a decree from my ex-wife wanting a divorce. 444 days later, the state of Illinois granted it.

Next: With a, i think, Wind of the Holy Spirit passing over my spiritual body at night, opened a door, 444 days long, ending on Passover the following year, the night of at sundown, closing that cycle. It was the blood line of my earthly father God(sins of the father) was opening up by spiritual decree of the Lord, bringing information of what had happened in my family line, prayers of repentance to bring about a spiritual change and new beginning for me and my family.

Next: it was the same with my mothers side of the family, except there was Jewish roots and other events, that brought me to Deut 28:20 that I needed to pray with my family for the forsaking of our God by my great grandfather, who I am 95% certain was Jewish.  With the passing of wind over my spirutal body at night the clock was started and 444 days later, now on a different day, ended on Passover  the following year at sundown.

Now as that above cycle was running, fifty days later, a Power event happened, where I felt Power flow thru my body that night, it was another cycle that ended on Penticost after passover.   That is four cycles. My life has been transformed from the terrible dysfunction of the past to the new life I have in Jesus today... A miracle...

Dean, I know these e-mail can be time consumming and this is a long winded one for sure. But this is why I am writing to ask: Do you have information in the 444 day cycles? The Lord has opened another Door on the Morning of January 20th, starting the clock, the first day being Jan 21, ends in 444 days on sundown of Passover the following year.  The event was Fire on my hips and legs early Sunday morning. Later I had a awesome visitation from the Lord at about 3 am that had me in tears for hours and reflexed revival spreading out east and north from texas.

The Lord has strongly impressed upon me to learn about these 444days cycles and I have gleaned some info. I was hoping you might have direction for me to take.  From the bible the most obveous is Nehemiah's getting a decree from the king to rebuild Jerusalem in 444 BC up to the new testament and the birth of Christ.  Hey that's a good thought!  444 closing out the old and bring Christ into the mix having His life now in it...I like that...

The theme is Fire. I have felt the other Elements of the Holy Spirit on my spiritual body, first water, then wind and followed by power and now fire. I think oil might be next...Hope this isn't to much, I have a hard time finding people of these experiences to help me comprehend what the Lord is doing here. Is it a cycle to intercession?

God Bless Tom Donnan

   A. Hi Tom,

I like how you said that the Lord has impressed upon you to learn what these 444 day cycles mean. That is a critical point. While other people may give you ideas, and while some of the words you receive may seem right, you should always be careful to take anything you get to the Lord yourself. Our relationship with Him is the most important thing. It is our foundation and nothing should ever get in the way of coming directly to Him.

God will often speak to us in dreams, symbols and signs. He does this in part to get our attention, to see if we our listening to Him, but He also does it because it is often the only way to get us to pursue Him and dig into what He desires to tell us. If God had not used these 444 cycles with you, you wouldn't have been asking questions or searching as much as you are. And while He may continue to speak this way to us over much of our lives, it is important to realize that He desires to speak more clearly and plainly to us -- if we will only spend the time and passion developing our relationship with Him.

That said, I got a definite sense that these 444 day cycles represent freedom for you. They mark the end and death to an old season, and life and resurrection to a new season. And isn't this exactly what rang true in your own heart? Like you said about Nehemiah in 444 BC -- the cycle pictured there is the "closing out the old and bringing Christ into the mix having His life now in it".

There is an interesting cycle repeated after 444 BC. Four more cycles after that (4 * 444) brings us to 1776, the date of our independence, the date that we were set free. There is another 444 day cycle in American history, and that's the number of days the hostages were held in Iran. They were set free on January 20th, 1981 -- the same day of the year that your last cycle began on.

Your first cycle was marked by an event setting you free. The next three cycles all end on Passover, which marks the event that set the slaves free and marks resurrection to new life. Everything is end to the old, and start of the new. Death and life.

But notice how the first cycle dealt with your ex-wife, the second your father's side, the third with your mother's side. It looks like God is doing a complete healing here. And that would suggest that the fourth -- and last (four sets of 444) -- cycle will deal with *you*.

Now, while it's possible to dig deeper into all the other possible meanings here, I would counsel caution. The most basic message, the most important message will always be the simplest one. In this case, He desires to restore life to you and set you free. That's pretty simple. And while it can be tempting to try to find many other messages here – and there may well be many others -- consider how amazing that basic message is for you. Spend time exploring what that means for you. Spend time asking Him how you can be completely set free. Spend time getting to know what His life is really like.

In other words, take the basic message God is giving you and run with it. Let it really sink in. Let it change you. Let it draw you closer to God than ever before.

I pray God will open your eyes to what being set free and given new life with Him truly means.

God bless,
Dean

Q

Hi Dean, would like to ask you what the symbolism or prophetic meaning of a funeral is. I had a dream where I attended 2 funerals with my boyfriend and his family. Thank you Amber

 A

Hi Amber,

The reason God sometimes speaks to us in dreams is because He desires to catch our attention and see if we will seek Him. Because dreams are not clear, we are forced to unravel them. We can attempt to do that through our own wisdom, or we can do that by seeking Him and asking Him to show us things. The key here is that we are in a relationship with God and He wants to reveal things to us -- if we will lean close to Him and listen to what He has to say.

God wants us to seek wisdom, but He doesn't want us to seek answers apart from Him. He wants our hearts always focused on Him intent on learning from Him.

So how about taking some quite time to seek God about your dream? Start by getting close to Him, just being with Him. Ask Him to show you whatever He wants. He knows what is on your heart, but He also knows what are the more important things you need to focus on. The more we demand particular answers from Him, the less we are being open to having Him instruct us.

In the end, God has often already put the answer to your dream in your heart. You know inside, but things make it hard to accept or see. God really doesn't have to say much to you when you open up and are honest with Him and yourself. You already know. Your dream is simply helping these things to come out.

But remember that God does not bring fears or confusion. He brings encouragement and hope. He wants to lead you into better things, things that are good and will bring you real joy. That is why it is safe to lean close to Him and listen for what He has to say. He is rich in mercy and grace -- not in judgment.

Look up and I think you'll see His gentle smile for you.

Q

From Rubie Martain Detroit Mi

I recently I got a word at the Chicago Encounter from a Prophet. The word was you are "An Intercessor and Watchmen". This is the second time I got this word that I was a Watchmen. I understand what my role as an Intercessor is to a certain degree but a Watchmen isn't clear to me. Can you please give me an explanation?

A Thanks so much for your question. For an answer, first consider these verses:

Ezekiel 3:16 Now it came to pass at the end of seven days that the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 17 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me:"

The Hebrew word for "watchman" in this verse means "to look out, to keep watch, to observe or watch closely". A watchman was one who stood on the wall of the city watching out for any enemy that dared come near the city. If the watchman saw an enemy approaching, his duty was to blow the trumpet and sound a warning so that the inhabitants of the city would be able to prepare themselves and not be destroyed.

In Ezekiel's case, God appointed him a watchman in the sense that God had a message for Israel that they were in danger because of their sins. God wanted someone to blow the warning that God Himself had seen their wickedness and would allow the sword to come to them.

In other words, a watchman is not only someone who sees the approach of the enemy and warns the people, but one who can speak a warning from God. Typically, the watchman role is tied to the intercessor role simply because the intercessors need to know how to intercede effectively. The watchman then is the one who sees the schemes of the enemy and instructs the intercessors on how to combat the enemy in the spirit realm through prayer.

But don't let me limit what God may have for you. Seek God about this. Study His word. Ask God what He is saying to you. Ask Him what He wants you to watch out for. Ask Him how to be a good watchman and how you are to sound the trumpet in your particular circumstances.

And even when you think you've figured out what God desires of you, keep going back to learn more from Him and allow Him to correct and guide you. More than anything, we are in a relationship with Him and that is something that is very personal. He wants to show you things personally, and lead you to see things that He has uniquely gifted you to see.

Those who are appointed watchman are appointed because they can be trusted to stand watch. They are not only chosen because they can see (or discern), but because they can be trusted to keep watch even when they are tired and wish somebody else would do the job. They also have a great responsibility, because so many depend on being warned in time. For me, this means you need to take your role in seeing things seriously. Don't assume somebody else will know what to intercede for or how to pray. Take your role seriously and ask God for His guidance when you intercede so that you will gain the eyes He wants you to have.

And remember, exercise your gifts in all love, for that's the heart of our Father. When one blows a trumpet of warning it can be easy to also take on a judgmental heart, while the heart of the Father is rich in mercy and grace and His warnings are issued to spare us from harm and destruction, not to bring it.

I hope that helps.

God bless you,

Dean

Q.Hey Dean,

A few months back, the Lord spoke a Single word to me and He said, "Apostolic" Since then the Lord has given me dreams and a huge prophesy was spoken over my life about ministry and then some. I was searching CPV for any articles/teaching on the Apostolic ministry and found none. Any recommendations?

I am still trying to decipher what the Lord is trying to speak to me. Any input or a Fresh word from the Lord would be helpful!

Thank You,

In His Service,

Jacinta Pena

 A.

 Hi Jacinta,

Apostle comes from the Greek word “apostolos” and simply means “a delegate, a messenger, one sent forth with orders”.  You could think of an apostle as someone that God gives a blueprint to, and then that person leads others in building and carrying out that blueprint.

But it is also much more than this, because to lead the way God desires you to lead is not something that comes natural. The world is full of fathers who have families and children that they “lead”, but how many do it in the way that God desires them to? Even when we have the best of intentions, it often takes years to gain the wisdom needed to be a good father, and the same applies to becoming a “good” apostle.

Worse, the church currently doesn’t have many good role models to follow. Just as worldly fathers can abuse their authority, so too can “apostles”. The very word “apostle” conveys such a great sense of authority that it is taking a very long time for the church to learn the wisdom needed to do it right.

In my view, we are only starting to understand what it means to be an apostle. Very few have the revelation, wisdom or understanding to explain it well. I have seen very little on the topic that discusses it well. And while I’ve seen several that could qualify as holding an apostolic office, I’ve only heard one that explains it with the wisdom I think is needed, and that is Bill Johnson.

I searched and found this article (here) on the apostolic by Bill Johnson. Even though it is quite short, it is full of much wisdom. I would study this carefully and pray through it asking God to show you what He is saying at each point and how it would apply to you.

There is a reason God spoke the word “apostolic” to you. In part, it was to get you to look at a bigger picture of what God desires for you, but it is also to show you that there is much responsibility, learning and wisdom that you need to gain. Apostolic isn’t given to move you into a larger ministry, it’s given because larger ministry requires you to move into that role.

In other words, you need to start thinking on an apostolic level because that’s needed for where God desires to take you.

I pray that God will give you the wisdom you need to understand what apostolic really means and how to move into it.

God bless,
Dean

Q.

        Hi Pastor Theresa,
Got a question for you:
How do you minister to someone who is already wealthy--and their natural needs are already met? For example, if you educated yourself, made effective decisions and wealth came to you because of this. Then you visit a church where the people were basically praising God hoping to receive "basic necessities"...like a car, house, money--wealth, etc...how can we minister to that wealthy person who basically doesn't understand why all the jumping and leaping for wealth is happening. Their mindset is to work the principles...what does that wealthy person do in a service like that? How do they get ministered to...so that they recognize that they need God too. In short: How do you convince a rich man that he needs God?

Be bless You
Rubie

A.

Hi Rubie,

Pastor Theresa forwarded your question to me and I try to give you an answer.

You raise a number of good questions. As Jesus said in three of the gospels, "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God". A commentary I looked at said this was a common expression used by the Jews "to declare any thing that was rare or difficult". And why? Well because the rich man can rely and trust in himself. He isn't compelled to rely or trust in God.

It’s common sense. People call out for help when they need help.

Of course, we need a lot more help than we realize, but it can be hard to convince someone they need help, especially someone who is a self-made man. A self-made man may not only have wealth (in money), but he likely has a wealth of knowledge and understanding that got him those riches. I’ve also found that scientific or intelligent people have a difficult time entering into the kingdom of God. They’ve constructed a view of how the world works and it’s hard for them to fit God’s supernatural into that conception – even if they want to!

But here’s something to consider. Just because you have monetary success, knowledge and understanding, that doesn’t mean that you have illumination or wisdom, or relationship.

The illumination that comes from God lets you see things that others can’t. Daniel 2:22 says, “He reveleth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with Him”. Light is key here. The closer you come to God seeking Him in truth, the more light that will dwell in you. Remember that Daniel was made master of all the educated, smart and wise people in a secular kingdom. He was put in that position because he could see things others couldn’t.

But Daniel didn’t stop with light that let him see things others couldn’t. Once he saw something that others didn’t, he would ponder it and contemplate and pray on it until God gave him a fully understanding of what he was seeing. It is not enough to see something; you must also understand what it is, or what it means. Once again, the closer you come to God, the more He is able to help you understand.

But Daniel didn’t even stop with understanding. He took it one step further, and sought God for wisdom in the matter. Wisdom in this sense means to know what to do, to be able to make shrewd judgments. Just because you’ve seen something or understood it, doesn’t mean you’ll know what to do about it. Here again, the closer you come to God, the more he will guide you and give you the wisdom you need.

I haven’t made these things up either. Daniel 5:11 says that Daniel was found to have “the Spirit of the Holy God” in him, and that he was a man of “light, understanding and wisdom”. You can see a study I’ve done on this here.

But let’s not stop here, for Daniel had one other thing. He had relationship with God. Think about that for a moment. How many businessmen would love to meet and be mentored by the top CEO’s or businessmen in the country? Well, God just happens to know a little more than they do.

But it’s even better, because God not only is willing to develop a relationship with us -- teaching us, mentoring us and guiding us -- He is also a really wonderful and loving Father. He wants to be with us. He wants to show us what is possible with Him. He wants us to be like Him! We’re His kids after all!

Now the truth is that the man you are talking about may not fit in well to some churches. The people may simply not talk the same language he talks and they may be seeking God for different needs. But that just means that he needs to find Christians that talk like he does. I recently met a pastor who used to be a commodities trader in New York. He said many of the traders never felt comfortable in regular churches, so he made a church that was for them. He has a website here.

God bless and I pray the rich man you’re talking about senses the heart and passion of God for him.

Q
From: ronke
Subject: Hi
Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 20:05:31 +0000 (GMT)

Hi!

My question is related to the prophetic. I have had two experiences now that sort of felt like I was prophesying. The first one was in a church. I was meant to pray to round up the singing. As I started to pray, I felt this, I don't know something changed in the atmosphere and I fell to the ground. I just started saying some things and using the first person singular. I was a bit freaked out so I stopped cos I was not sure if it were me or not. I am always a bit cautious about this particular gift, cos I just do not want to say what I have not been sent to say.

And then about two days later, I had the same experience as I was praying with my sister. I started to declare some things about her son and spoke with the first person singular again and using the "thus sayest the Lord". I think I was not as freaked out as I was the first time but I still pulled out cos I was afraid.

Can you please explain what the prophetic is really all about, how one receives words of prophecy, if the prophetic usually leads to a change in the environment, where you almost feel like a hand is upon you and so on. Please give as much detail as you can.

Thanks.
Ronke

Sorry to bother you with this but I really need to know.

A Hi Ronke,

Those are wonderful questions and I’m glad to hear you are seeking answers. It’s difficult to give you all the details you need in a short reply like this, and while I will try to help you, what would really help is to get some good books on the prophetic. I especially recommend Steve Thompson’s book, “You May All Prophesy!”. Another great book is Jack Deere’s “The Beginner’s Guide to The Gift of Prophecy”. And if you would prefer a CD teaching series, get Patricia King’s “Prophetic Boot Camp”. Patricia also has a number of “Interviews with the Prophets” videos online. While these videos are not necessarily teaching on the prophetic itself, if you watch enough of them, you will definitely get a better idea of how seasoned people move in the prophetic.

One of the first principles to consider is that prophets hear “in part”. 1 Corinthians 13:9 says, “For we know in part and we prophesy in part”. No matter how seasoned we are or how many times we’ve given accurate words in the past, we can always miss it, or only get what God is saying partly correct. This is because we filter words that our spirit hears through our souls, emotions, assumptions and biases.

Because of this, we should ALWAYS try to have someone else, preferably someone seasoned in the prophetic, listen to the word we give and let us know if any part of the word seems off in any way. If you have no one around who is seasoned in the prophetic, then be open and honest that you are new to this and ask people to pray and weigh the word you give. Prophetic words will often confirm what is already in people’s hearts, so if their hearts don’t bare witness to the word, then don’t try to convince them of the word. Let God speak to them. Your task is to seek God for what you missed or how you should have handled what God gave you.

Luke 24:32 says, “And they said to one another, ‘Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’” This is often what happens when people hear prophetic words that God intends to speak to them at that moment. This happens because God bypasses our minds and intellect and pours truth right into our hearts. But He doesn’t just pour out at any time; He waits for us to be ready for His words.

You describe another thing that often happens with the prophetic. At times God’s presence will show up and change the atmosphere. Some will notice this and others won’t. Sometimes this change will be overwhelming and sometimes it will be subtle. But when heaven invades Earth, people who hear prophetically will often start hearing what God is saying. It’s similar to when Jesus said in Luke 19:40, “I tell you that if these keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out”. When the King arrives, everything – including the very stones – wants to cry out.

This same phenomenon happened with king Saul. In 1 Samuel 10:10, the Bible says, “When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them”. But in verse 11, the people who were with Saul asked, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”

It seems that Saul was not at all known as a prophet. No matter, when the presence of God that was with the group of prophets came near, Saul could not contain himself. He was compelled to prophesy. In effect, Saul moved into an atmosphere that changed him into a prophet!

This sounds similar to what happened to you. I suppose king Saul was freaked out a little like you were too.

Even still, just because we are a stone that wants to cry out does not necessarily mean that God wants us to cry out right then or that we will cry out exactly what He wants us to. Our heart should be to ask God for discernment and wisdom of what to do. Remember, Jesus said in John 5:19 that He only did what He saw the Father do. That should be our heart as well. So when we sense that change in the atmosphere, and when we sense that God is close, we should look (or ask) to see what the Father is doing. It is easy to do less or more than the Father is doing. We may do less if we are freaking out and are unsure of what is going on. We may do more if we assume the Father is saying more than we actually heard from Him.

If you are unsure what to do, then write down what you are hearing from God and then ponder it in prayer asking God for more understanding of what He is saying.

In my experience, prophetic words don’t need to be filled with the phrase “thus sayest the Lord”. This is generally done because you are feeling God so strongly that you just can’t help yourself. But God’s words will burn in people’s hearts without having to use this phrase. I find that phrase is more added by us either because that’s how we’ve heard other people prophesy (that’s all we know), or because God’s word feels so strong to us that we want other people to feel that same sense. I find that if you simply tell people straight up what God is saying, they will very much know that it’s God speaking. Their hearts are ready for it.

So, what is the prophetic all about? Well, there are many different types of prophetic but consider what 1 Corinthians 14:3 says, “But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort”. God’s heart is to love and build-up people not to tear them down. God’s heart is to encourage us with what He will do and where He will take us, not to reject us. God’s heart is to bring us close, not to push us away.

The prophetic is simply being open to the Holy Spirit, the kingdom of Heaven and hearing what God is saying. Jesus told us to pray, “Thy Kingdom come.” When His kingdom comes we see things more clearly, we understand what is true, we believe for the impossible. The prophetic is being open to the heart and Spirit of God so that the church can be edified.

No wonder Paul said in 1 Cor 14:5, “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied.” And why? Because then “the church may receive edification”.

How does one receive words of prophecy? In many different ways. Some hear soft whispers. Others see words or letters. Some smell His fragrance. Others feel His presence. Some see visions. Others just know what God is doing. Some sense things in their body. Others see angels. Some get a single word. Others get what seems like an entire book downloaded in an instant. Some don’t get anything until an angel shows up. Others pour out prophetic words like a raging river.

We are each unique and God loves to speak to us in whatever way we are open to. But He may only speak a little to see if we will seek Him for more. He may only say a little to see if we will stop when He stops. He may say something in a way we are not used to in order to help us see things we haven’t seen before. He is a very relational God that speaks to us in very personal ways.

But things can also pour out of our own hearts. And even worse, things can come from the second heaven (or demons). Everything needs to be judged and weighed. Nothing should EVER go against Scripture. Everything should always have His fragrance on it. Never presume that a word has to be from God just because of how we feel. Every word should always be tested.

The more you read Scripture and ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes and pour His light on His words, the more you will be familiar with the heart and character of God and the more you will know when it is truly His voice that you are hearing. Everything comes down to our relationship with Him, and He has spoken to us directly through Scripture so that is our best way to get to know Him.

But also be open to when He comes and the atmosphere changes. Ask Him what He is doing. Ask Him what He is saying. If you give a word, ask Him if you missed anything. Ask Him to teach you and show you more. God gave of the Holy Spirit to lead us in His ways and He will do that.

And finally, do everything in love. The words we give are NOT more important than loving people we give them to. And in the end, they aren’t our words at all, so we don’t have to make sure people “get it”. We can leave that in God’s hands.

As I said, this short reply can hardly cover all the different aspects of the prophetic, so I recommend you look into some of the materials that I listed at the start.

I pray this helps and that God teaches you how to hear Him and follow what He is doing in all love.

God bless,
Dean

 Q
Goodmorning Dean,
Attached is an email I extracted from your site.  I am a minister in the Washington DC area. I have a sister in the Washington DC area that was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in Sept 2007.  She has been through 3 surgeries and 7 months of radiation.  Her faith is awesome.  Cancer has reoccured 4 times in the chest wall and back in the last one year. We believe in the healing power of jehovah.  Do you have any info on the doctor from Cuban who now lives in Miami?

She told me that the plate and pins were easy to feel, and she could very easily tell that they were really gone. She even said a tiny hole in one of her bones was no longer there, and she also had regained all the flexibility in her ankle that she had lost, which she plainly demonstrated for me.

I think that's pretty cool!

I also spoke to a Cuban doctor who now lives in Miami (he is the one I wrote about in my last conference report). He told me that he has seen hundreds and hundreds of healings and salvations in his doctor's office. Even still, he said it is hard with his scientific training to believe it sometimes. He prayed for one patient who had tumors (or something -- I don't remember precisely what he said it was) all over his head and face and nothing happened that day, but when the man came back they were all gone. The doctor said where are they, and the man looked at him dumbfounded saying, don't you remember you prayed for me?! Well yes, of course the doctor said, but these things don't simply disappear! Even one who regularly sees and believes in miracles can find it hard to believe what science says is impossible.

In another case, he told me of one of his patients who had a daughter in Brazil who had breast cancer that had metastasized and was given only three months to live. She had already gone out and bought her casket and made all the funeral arrangements. But the doctor called her on the phone and told her not to believe she was going to die, that God would heal her. He prayed for her over the phone and God did heal her! What I liked the most was listening to the doctor as he smiled broadly and said, "God canceled her funeral"!!

That's cool

A.

Hi Margie,

I'm sorry, but I don't have any info on the doctor in Miami. I simply talked to him at several conferences we were both at and never even got his name. What struck me about his testimony of the lady in Brazil (who was healed of breast cancer) was how he seemed to jump at the chance to pray for her and to reverse the diagnosis. Just hearing him tell me the story I could feel how his faith had conquered the enemy.

This is what you need to look for. Look for people to pray for your sister who jump at the chance, who you can sense God has appointed them for this battle -- whether they are young or old -- experienced or not.

The enemy seeks to discourage and weaken both faith and the will to fight. Warriors seek to encourage and overcome with the Truth of God. I pray God will send you warriors who will assist you and your sister in winning this battle. I pray God's Glory will cover your sister, strengthen her and rejuvenate every part of her, filling her with His abundant Life.

God bless,

Hi Dean:
I am writing because I am trying to find an answer to something. Do you think we (Christians) will be here for any of the Tribulation? I have listened to what different people have to say, and I believe that these people have godly character and integrity... Why do they come up with different answers? I was reading in Revelations and it sounds like we could be here for part of it.. If we are then we would want to be prepared... If we are not, then maybe it is being read wrong... Could you shed some light please? Thank you for your time. Tracy K. Roberts, C.O.H.
Hi Tracy,

Those are great questions, and ones I've wondered about too. Unfortunately, the widely varying views on this subject have brought a lot of division to the church, and that's something that should give us pause before we declare that we understand this area well. Consider the disciples who lived with Jesus. He instructed them on a daily basis and specifically told them about His coming death and resurrection, and yet they couldn't understand what his words meant until the events actually happened. Some revelations of God remain largely opaque to us until we see the revelation unfold before us.

Think about it. The disciples couldn't see what Jesus was telling them because their mindsets were so ingrained with a certain image of what the coming of the Messiah meant. This was so bad that Peter went so far as to rebuke Jesus! As you know, Jesus turned to Peter and said, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." (Mat 16:23, NKJV)

The word in the Greek for "mindful" there is "phroneo" which means that Peter was not of the same mind as God, or not in harmony with Him. Instead, because Peter's mindset did not allow for the Messiah dying, his mind came in harmony with the thoughts and wisdom of men.

Just because we have fellowship with Christ, just because we sit at His feet and learn from Him, just because we have committed our very lives to Him and His cause, does not mean that we will always be in harmony with Him -- especially when it comes to how God will play out His drama on Earth.

The Greek word for "offense" in that verse is "skandalom" and means a trap, a snare, a stumbling block, or any person by which one is drawn into error. In other words, Satan attempted to use Peter's misconceptions to trip Jesus up and pull Him into error. Peter had no idea how much damage his way of thinking would cause if it were followed. Peter had the best of intentions and yet he was not only wrong, his error had the potential to bring great harm.

If this teaches us anything it's that we truly need to get in harmony with God's thinking on this, and frankly I don't see that the church understands end-time events near well enough to be able to do that. What we can do is to keep following Jesus and learning to be obedient to Him. The better we can follow His voice now, the more likely we will be able to follow Him when it becomes critical to do so (whether that's the tribulation period or not).

While I can't say exactly what will happen during the Great Tribulation, I do know that we live in a world of tribulation and as the end of times approaches there seems to be an acceleration of many things -- both things of God and things of Satan. This will lead to some confusion, because on the one hand, some things will get better, and on the other hand, some things will get worse. To me, it's like the battle for mankind is coming to a head and both sides will have victories and both sides will have defeats.

One of the most tragic things would be for Christians to sit this battle out assuming that everything is preordained and that we have no effect on what happens. Satan didn't seem to think Jesus' life was preordained and he tried to change events repeatedly. Likewise, Satan tries to mess up each of our lives and cause us to fail in the assignment God has given us. My point is that regardless of how end-time events actually play out, we need to individually carry out the the assignment God has given us, as those assignments may be crucial for our region (or area of influence) and what God is doing.

So what is our assignment? Well, first we should be faithful wherever God has put us, not just in the church, but also with our families and at work. He who is faithful in the little things will be given more. Second, we need to recognize when God is pouring favor on our lives and take advantage of what He has given us. The world is looking for solutions and answers to their problems and we are to be a light in their darkness (not just in matters of salvation). We need to step up to the challenge as Joseph and Daniel did when they were given the opportunity, and seek God for His wisdom and understanding to be able to do so.

One person can have a HUGE impact on their nation, changing the destiny of that nation and the role it will play in end-time events. I heard of a woman who purposely took a job as a secretary to the Minister of Interior of her nation (a Central-American country), so she could have an influence on this man. She was able to convince him that a Christian ministry might be able to help out with corruption in one of their prisons, and desperate for a solution, the Minister of Interior decided to try it. This Christian ministry rose to the challenge and in a year turned that prison completely around. Upon seeing this, the Minister of Interior asked the Christians if they could take on ALL the prisons in their nation, and seeing the favor God was giving them they not only said yes they would handle all the prisons, but they asked if there were any other areas where they could help. Why yes, said the Minister of Interior, as a matter of fact they were also having corruption issues in the military!

So, because of one simple Christian lady, a nation is currently being transformed.

Many great men of the Bible lived in terribly "anti-Christ" empires of their days, and yet God used them to do great things. Who will be the Josephs and Daniels of our day when we need them the most? Who will remain in harmony with God's thoughts even when events don't make sense from what we thought they would turn out like? Who will refuse to become a stumbling block to the purposes of God by not demanding that things work out the way we think they should?

Who will have the insight, understanding and wisdom that Daniel had to not only see the hidden mysteries of God, but to also understand what they mean and be able to make prudent judgments about what must be done?

Let's not be too quick to get answers to perhaps the deepest mysteries of the ages, but instead let's seek to live a life like Daniel and Joseph and learn how to be used by Him no matter where He puts us -- whether in a prison or on the king's palace. We don't need answers to every question, but we do need to know how to answer the crucial questions put to us each day.

Here's an exercise to try. Try reading through the Bible and consider what happens when God pours out His wrath. Does He warn His people and protect them or does He leave them to fend for themselves? Second, when an "anti-Christ" type empire is ruling, look at who God uses. Does He use the people hiding in caves or does He use those who stand up for Him no matter the cost? Moreover, how do those people handle the challenges they face?

While I appreciate efforts to make sense of scriptures and what they reveal about end-time events, consider how such teachings are helping you to live your life. If a teaching is helping you to live more like the great heroes of the Bible, then even if the teaching is not entirely accurate at least it has a valuable aspect to it. On the other hand, if a teaching is entirely accurate and yet fails to help you live the way Christ wants us to, then we need to reconsider its true value.

I pray that helps you.

God bless,
Dean

 What about error?

Sept 14 07

A question was raised that asks how are we to deal with fellow believers who are in error? Isn't it the case that their error will taint (like leaven) their whole person? How can we be in unity when there is disagreement and division? Doesn't the scripture that says "do not let them in your house" mean do not let them in your house

Well...

It's so easy to disagree and it's so easy to be offended, that I much prefer to see how I can encourage and help instead. Sometimes, when disagreements are great, it can be hard. But think of it this way... How many doses of encouragement does it take before a single dose of correction can be received? How much more will you listen to someone who you know desires the best for you over the one who spends all their time trying to convince you you're wrong?

Yes, error can taint us. When we don't understand a truth of God, it will effect our whole person. The more an error strikes at the core of our faith, the greater the distortion will be in other areas of our lives. This can lead to real harm not only in the person's life but in the lives of others around them. Even still, God loves them and often sees things differently than we do.

We should be open and honest, but even more, we should be loving -- which includes bearing all things, believing all thing, hoping all things and enduring all things (1 Cor 13:7).

The Greek word for "bearing" is "stego" and has to do with covering, as in protecting or concealing the errors and faults of others.

The Greek word for "believing" is "pisteuo" and has to do with entrusting someone and putting confidence in them.

The Greek word for "hoping" is "elpizo" and has to do with trusting and relying on someone, to put your hope in them.

The Greek word for "enduring" is "hypomeno" and has to do with remaining with someone, tarrying with them and not fleeing or leaving them.

The Bible says we can understand all mysteries and have all knowledge  (verse 2) , but if we don't have love, we are nothing. What is more important then? Convincing people of the truth as you understand it or loving them as described above, and in that love, sharing your heart with them?

Regarding the verse about not letting them in your house, look at how this verse (and context) is translated in the Holman Christian Standard bible:

2 John 1:7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves so that you don't lose what we have worked for, but you may receive a full reward. 9 Anyone who does not remain in the teaching about Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.

10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your home, and don't say, "Welcome," to him; 11 for the one who says, "Welcome," to him shares in his evil works.

This all has to do with remaining in the "teaching about Christ", and specifically that those who would come to teach in your house confess that Christ came in the flesh. This is talking about essential doctrines. We cannot receive a person into our house to teach us who does not hold to the essential doctrines of Jesus. If we honor a person in that way, we are contributing to helping them spread false teachings about Jesus. That is what John is talking about and it is that simple.

The key phrase is "remain in the teaching about Christ". Does a person who comes to your house to teach remain or not remain in the teaching the Apostles gave concerning Christ? Does he depart from the instructions about Christ (that John gave), or does he abide in them?

If he doesn't, then don't let him in your house and honor him by doing so.

I hope that helps.

  Anointing flow & discernment

  Q~Hi Dean

I had an experience last week with a small group of musicians that was new for me.  I'm sure I've been in situations like this before, but this time I was aware of it when it happened.  I was not leading this group so I did not know some of the songs.

I noticed the anointing & presence of the Lord on the very first song.  It came so fast.  That is unusual - normally it takes us awhile to come into unity & enter in - so the fact that it came so powerfully on the first song was amazing.

Not to long into the rehearsal, things shifted.  Several members of this band began talking about the past and old friendships and former worship leaders - and as they talked - the anointing just fell flat - like someone turned out the lights.

God showed me how they had shifted their focus off of Him and onto old memories.  This wasn't a time of testimonies - it was pure nostalgia.  I've never felt a spiritually downward shift happen that fast after sensing the anointing flowing that strong at the beginning.  He explained to me that it was a form of idolatry as people were shifting their attention off of Him.

My question to the list is this - when you are in situations where the anointing fades - this doesn't just have to be worship - it can apply to anything - when you sense there is a negative shift - a heaviness - to me it felt like an empty void replaced the anointing that had been flowing - so whenever you are simply discerning something is spiritually "off" - what do you do to re-engage with the Holy Spirit?  To shift things back toward Him?

And in matters of discernment in general, are there warning flags you have learned to watch for?  Do you feel a check in your spirit?  How have you learned to "test the spirits?"

Thanks

A~
Hi,

The first thing to remember is that we are a team. We are all in this together as one. You can only do so much by yourself and are not likely to succeed in re-engaging with the Holy Spirit, at the group level, unless you function as one.

This is how the enemy can succeed in quenching the Spirit. He does it by working on the weaker links in our group. Distract one person, and like dominoes that fall, soon everyone else will be distracted. And it doesn't even have to be the enemy, it can simply be our normal human nature that so easily gets off focus, reverting to our natural inclinations to nostalgia (and the like).

Since you were not leading this particular group, it would have been best to tell the leader what you were discerning. Depending on how comfortable you are with the particular group, you might need to tell the leader privately (i.e., go and whisper in their ear what you are sensing), or simply bring it up in front of everyone.

This would not be the time to correct anyone, but rather to encourage others to realize where they had been moments before (in His presence) and how it would be so good to get back in that place again -- which could be done by simply quieting down the distracting talk and refocusing on the Lord. In other cases, especially if the Holy Spirit is grieved, the team may need to repent to some degree.

If someone else is leading, then you have to leave it to them to direct this. But often they will allow you to share with the group in which case you need to step out into the sphere you have been given and speak in love and humility, especially seeing the group as a team that you are part of.

Discernment is a pretty big topic, but you should realize that it can go two ways. Not only can you sense when people are focused largely on carnal things, but you can also discern when God is moving on someone. Both types of discernment are needed. The first requires wisdom on how to help the person refocus on God, while the second type of person should be recognized as a spark that if fanned can ignite the whole group on fire.

The first case is where the "testing of spirits" comes in. It matters greatly why a person is not focused on God and you need wisdom to figure out what is causing that. It may be that they are not focused simply because they are preoccupied with other matters. But maybe they have some other issue, like hurt, bitterness, anger, unforgiveness, jealousy, etc. Or maybe a demon is messing with them (or the group). Testing the spirits simply means sensing what is at the root of the issue. Once you know that, then you can better deal with the problem.

The "check" in your spirit usually comes when you are missing something. The "check" is in effect saying, whoa, stop a minute and check more carefully what is going on here. So often we blindly assume things in the natural when our spirit is catching the fact that God is trying to show us something else. When we get those "checks" we need to stop and ask God what He is saying.

But a "check" can go two ways too. Notice how you said how "unusual" it was that the anointing and presence of the Lord came on the first song. That is not only a wonderful thing to happen, it is an indication (or a "check") that something significant is happening. In such a case, we should realize that God is doing something special and take that wonderful opportunity to lean in further to what God wants to do.

How many times have we missed a move of God not only because we have been distracted by idle conversation, but also because we have failed to appreciate when He is moving in unusual ways -- and then move with Him into new places?

I hope that helps.

1 QUESTION
Hi ,

Okay - assume I understand that Jesus was the perfect spotless Lamb - the only one who could atone for sins - also assume I understand we have access to the kingdom through Him - that's a given.

I still wonder where the line is to be drawn between who He is/was as the Son of God and who we are supposed to be as His sent ones?

For example - Jesus walked through walls - He also walked on water -

I just wonder - please forgive me for being hung up on this - I want to fully understand this before I share this teaching with others - I guess that since Jesus was the ONLY ONE who was supposed to die on the cross as the perfect, sinless one to atone for our sins...

Then I just wonder - I don't know how else to say this theologically - where do His actions end and ours begin?

I mean healings & signs & wonders & miracles are supposed to follow those who believe...

But when we say that we should do as Jesus did - we aren't to lay our lives down to atone for the sins of the world - because only Jesus could do that - so obviously there is a limit to what we are supposed to do like Jesus - again - I am sorry to ask such a confusing question - but it's what I am wrestling with - and I sincerely appreciate your patience with me as I get this sorted out.

1 ANSWER
Matthew 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

John 14:12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

"works" - ergon - that which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking, any thing accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind,an act, deed, thing done

"greater" - meizon - comparative: greater, larger, elder, stronger

2 Cor 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs and wonders and mighty deeds.

"perseverance" - hypomone - steadfastness, constancy, endurance, the characteristic of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings

1 Cor 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

1 Samuel 14:6 Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, "Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For nothing restrains the Lord from saving by many or by few." 7 So his armor bearer said to him, "Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart."

Hi,

Not only are signs and wonders to follow those who believe, but we are commanded to do incredible works to the point that Jesus assures us that we will do even greater works than He did. Those used by Him will not simply display signs, wonders and mighty deeds, but will do them in spite of trials and sufferings. But while we are to do signs and wonders, even the greatest of wonders are ultimately pointless unless we are characterized by His love.

In so many ways we are to be like Him. He persevered to the end and so should we. He did everything out of love, and so should we. He followed His Father and so should we. He did signs and wonders and so should we. He set the captives free, and so should we. He proclaimed the good news and so should we. He lived a life of faith and so should we.

The only thing that separates what He did from what we should do is that He is the door that enabled us to approach the Father, and enabled the Holy Spirit to live in us. He is the first, and by being the only one who could be the first, we can be the ones who then follow after Him.

What I like about the story of Jonathan is that God seems to like faith that says let's go do something God hasn't told us specifically to do, but we know that with God it is possible and maybe He will go with us. There's something in me that says this is exactly what God wants. He doesn't want to have to tell us every detail of what we are to do. He wants children who see what family we are part of, what we have inherited, and what the Father's heart for us is, and then say if God is willing let's go take a garrison of the enemy!

In other words, I tend to see the possibilities of what we can do in God as unlimited and endless. Even more, I see God as longing to discover if our hearts will be filled with faith as Jonathan's was. It's as if He can hardly hold back Himself in His desire to pour out through us (or on our behalf) and all He is waiting for is a heart that sees something is possible that normally would be completely impossible.

In a sense then, while Jesus was perfect, full of faith and only did what the Father did, and thus well pleasing to the Father, I am thinking that our occasional sputtering sparks of faith are what really thrills the Father. It's like He wants to do SOOO much through us and He's just waiting for us to open up and believe. He has SOOO much love and He's waiting for us to be captured by His love and love as He does.

The Father knew He could count on Jesus. But why should He count on us? Jesus never let Him down and yet we continually let Him down. Even so, His love is undiminished for us and He is constantly searching for the heart that will believe and trust in Him when all natural hope is lost.

Jesus demonstrated what is possible. He showed us how to follow the Father. He opened the door making everything possible.

But we get to thrill the Father. While we are to do everything out of love for Him and others, we should never limit how much freedom we have as His children to move as our hearts are stirred by faith in Him.

Hi Everyone!

Well, I had been hoping to do more with all the video my son took at The Call Nashville and all the photos I took while there (some 1900 pictures), but I just haven't had the time and while my son Elisha really loved filming there, he hasn't been near as interested in doing the video editing (lots of tedious hard work). So, I've decided to simply post the best photos I have on the Internet and not try to do something fancier.

I've posted 324 of the photos here: http://www.pbase.com/azdean/the_call_nashville

That's a LOT of photos, but you can simply jump around and if any photo catches your eye, just click on it and you'll get to see a larger version of it.

I was hoping to capture what God was doing at The Call that weekend through photos that would show some of the passion in the faces and hearts of those who were drawn there. While it's easy to snap pictures, it's quite another thing to capture what's in people's hearts. And while I captured a part of it, I know I have a long way to go to do an event like this real justice.

Anyway, you can actually leave comments if you like, so if some photo especially touches you, I would really appreciate a comment.

Thanks,
Dean Cooper
